Letters from a Stoic – Lucio Anneo Seneca
OUR FAVORITE PART:
“Life’s like a play: it’s not the length, but the excellence of the acting that matters. It doesn’t matter where you end up. End where you please, just prepare a good ending.”
SUMMARY:
Lucio Anneo Seneca is recognized as one of the greatest thinkers of antiquity for his contributions to Stoicism, a philosophical current that encourages us to live in the present and stay calm in difficult times. In this collection of epistles to his friend and pupil Lucilius, the Roman philosopher gives us dozens of pearls of wisdom and humility on topics such as life, one’s finances, death, leisure and friendship.
What is really surprising about this book is its validity in the modern era, a fact that in recent years has caused it to be rescued as a self-help manual to learn to live in peace and face problems such as anxiety or the loss of loved ones. Dasso Saldivar’s version, with the brilliant translation by Jaime Bofill y Ferro, is especially emotional. We recommend reading a letter every morning before leaving home.
